Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye has received a straight red card after a physical altercation with team-mate Michael Keane in their Premier League fixture against Manchester United.

The incident occurred in the 13th minute of the match, with the score at 0-0.

Bruno Fernandes had fired a shot over for United, leaving Gueye furious with team-mate Keane over something that had occurred in the build-up.

He then squared up to the England centre-back, with Keane pushing him away before Gueye pushed back in the opposite direction.

Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford rushed in to break the pair apart but the damage was already done, with Gueye shown a straight red card by the referee.

The incident was not initially shown by Sky Sports cameras, as they had cut to a replay of Fernandes' miss.

The Premier League's Match Centre subsequently stated that Gueye was deemed to have made a 'clear strike to the face' of Keane.

"The referee's call of red card to Gueye for violent conduct was checked and confirmed by VAR - with the action deemed to be a clear strike to the face of Keane," the statement reads.

Despite the incident and their player disadvantage, Everton took the lead on 28 minutes through Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's 18-yard curling strike.

A similar incident occurred back in the 2023/24 season, when Sheffield United were 1-0 down against Wolves at Molineux.

Blades midfielder Vinicius Souza confronted defender Jack Robinson and aimed a slap at the face of his team-mate, who managed to dodge out of the way of it. On that occasion, the referee took no action against either player.

And in 2016, Preston North End forwards Eoin Doyle and Jermaine Beckford were involved in a fight during an away match against Sheffield Wednesday, with both players being sent off at the same time.

Manager Simon Grayson described the incident as an 'absolute embarrassment' and added: "I've been in the game for 30 years playing and managing and I've never been involved with anything like that ... You expect it in the playground between four or five-year-olds."
